CANON PERSONALITY:
"You drool when you sleep." When our protagonist Percy first sees Annabeth Chase, a girl described as having "blonde princess curls", the first words out of her mouth aren't exactly friendly. And this tends to sums up most people's first impression of Annabeth-- she's intimidating, scary, judgmental and not easy to get close to. She's said to have a look in her eyes like she's trying to solve a problem, or march over to something and destroy it.
But while her loyalty and friendship is hard-won, once you have it you have a great ally-- Annabeth is all about her friends and family, a loyal and protective person. She's a good person to have on your side, and a bad person to piss off by hurting the people she cares about. Chiron describes her a "territorial" about her friends, and this is true. Her friends are her friends, hiss hiss back off. And while all this makes her sound like a scary guard dog , when she's not laser-focused on something else she is perfectly capable of acting like, y'know, a normal friend-- laughing, joking around, etc. She is a loyal and caring friend, and it's hard to lose that loyalty once you have it (like, seriously hard. you really have to fuck up.) She has a much more pleasant side to her when she isn't in a seek-and-destroy problem sort of mood. Piper McClean even hoped her own mother would be Athena because she thought it'd be cool to have Annabeth as a sister; after Rachel became the Oracle of Delphi they became closer friends; Frank Zhang goes to her when he can't figure a way out of Chinese handcuffs and later on Annabeth takes Frank's advice in defeating Arachne.
Her territorial tendencies extend especially to Percy, her boyfriend, who she becomes rather possessive of. Not nasty possessive, but protective and easily jealous of some of his interactions with other girls. Such as when Rachel Elizabeth Dare was briefly in the picture as a romantic rival and when she was Not Happy with Percy when he spent time on Calypso's island while Annabeth thought he was... dead... "He was probably the bravest friend I ever had" followed by "single most annoying person I've ever met!" in Battle of the Labyrinth. (Both statements are true.) Percy is a large part of who Annabeth is. And not just because she completely loses her shit whenever he's missing (particularly when it's for six months, fuck you Hera??), but just a large part of how she developed as a person-- probably due to the almost absurd number of life-threatening situations they've been put through, including hell itself. (Well, Tartarus isn't actually hell, but honestly Close Enough.) No doubt both would have developed very differently without the other. There relationship hasn't always been the smoothest, beginning with Annabeth certain Percy wasn't "good enough" for the Great Prophecy and at times wanting to maybe just pitch him off a cliff, but now the two are near inseparable.
Annabeth is a child of Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom. Her demigod "powers" are far from as flashy as others, but they are very useful. She has a keen knack for battle strategy, and absorbing knowledge. The Athena cabin at Camp Halfblood is full of books for a reason-- Athena's children love to learn, and love to strategist Annabeth is said to be a particularly skilled battle strategist. And while no one would peg her as an artist, she enjoys architecture. Like, a lot. Like, can spout off Fun Factstm about national monuments at whim, as well as angling to be a great architect herself one day. She enjoys designing and building, as well as admittedly the control aspect behind it as she tends to believe anything you can do she can do better. Unless you're Athena, as every child of hers knows that Athena is the best at Everything and you should never, ever question that.
Annabeth's fatal flaw is hubris-- pride. "Hubris means deadly pride, Percy. Thinking you can do things better than anyone else... Even the gods." She is full of it, and well-aware of it but doesn't have any interest in changing it. She has the pride of someone who will mock something trying to kill her, of someone who demand a "real challenge" from a sphinx instead of trivia, and most notably of someone who fully believes she could do better than the gods. "Don't you ever feel like, what if the world really is messed up? What if we could do it all over again from scratch?" Some of this pride isn't exactly undeserved. She is an incredible strategist and the architect for Olympus.
As a demigod, Annabeth's childhood was not an easy one. She was plagued by monsters-- spiders, in particular--, as well as a tense relationship with her step-mother who thought she was "making it up" and refused to believe her. At the tender age of seven, Annabeth was tired of this and ran away from home. It was in an alleyway that she met two people who had a huge impact on her-- Luke Castellan and Thalia Grace. Full of spirit, 7-year-old Annabeth attempted to brain Luke with a hammer at first. While it would be a bit absurd to say the 14-year-old and 12-year-old "adopted" Annabeth, they certainly took her on as their charge. Luke promised that he wouldn't let anything hurt her and that they would become a better family than what she had before. So, of course, that all went to shit. Thalia "died" and became a pine tree at Camp Halfblood, and not long before Thalia was reawakened Luke betrayed her and everyone at the Camp. Thalia got better, Luke did not. Thalia joined Artemis' hunters, and while Annabeth had considered the same, by the end of the Titan's Curse she had changed her mind.
Camp Halfblood is Annabeth's home. She was one of the campers that stayed year-round, unlike those who would only come for the summer. It was only after the start of the books that she began to return to her father's any amount of time, eventually beginning to repair that strained relationship with her parents. Luke's betrayal hurt. "Family, Luke. You promised." He was someone Annabeth looked up to, considered family, and had a childish crush on. But as much as she looked up to Luke, she refused his offer to join the Titan army and serve Kronos.Because fuck Kronos. But she also would defend Luke whenever Percy brought up stopping him, getting angry at Percy's comments about how "evil" Luke is. Despite her crush, she tells Luke just before he dies that no, she hadn't loved him. Luke remains an important part of who Annabeth is, from her memories of him to the celestial bronze knife that she kept until losing it at the end of the Mark of Athena.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
► GENERAL DEMIGOD ABILITIES Like all Greek demigods, Annabeth has ADHD and dyslexia. The first means she has supernatural alertness and keen awareness to keep her prepared and alive in battle, the latter means she's hard-wired for Ancient Greek and as such reads best in that language. And like most demigods, Annabeth was trained at Camp Halfblood to fight. She is skilled at armed and hand-to-hand combat. She also is skilled in judo-flipping her boyfriend. Superhuman strength, and agility, and durability-- not Absurdly so, but noticeably so. She's capable of judo-flipping her boyfriend with ease, vaulting over tall objects and gripping the railing of a helicopter, and once fell from a great height to suffer only a broken ankle.
► DAUGHTER OF ATHENA Athena is the Goddess of wisdom, and battle strategy, so Annabeth has a knack for both as well as with various weapons. Athena is also the goddess of crafts, making Annabeth a skilled weaver and with crafts.
► OTHER More code. Endurance, leadership, willpower. Architecture and building design.

AU HISTORY:
AU PERSONALITY:
• Annabeth was the second child to the well-off Castellans, a traveling business man and his wife. She was seven years younger than their elder son, Luke. They lived comfortably, thanks to Mr Castellan's work, but unfortunately the man prioritized making that so rather than being at home with his family very often.
• Annabeth never really minded this, and always thought her father was doing Important Work. As she got older she realized it wasn't that important, but still didn't fault him for it. There were certainly worse ways for a father to behave. As well, she always had her mother and brother around if she needed anyone.
• However, she definitely looked up more to her older brother than she did either of her parents. She loved them just as much, but she latched onto Luke-- despite their very different paths.
• As the Castellans were a more well-off family, Annabeth never wanted for anything as a child-- she still doesn't. While it'd be a stretch to say she was spoiled, she was certainly a bit privileged. Any activity she wanted to do in school, any book she wanted to read, any ridiculous lego set was hers if she asked. As she's gotten older she's realized not everyone lives this life-- particularly thanks to a look at the life Luke's best friend Thalia Grace had, which looked very different.
• From the get-go Annabeth was clearly a bright, intelligent child. The fact that everyone kept pointing it out made it all sort of go to her head. She skipped the third grade and went into fourth at age 8, and being the youngest in her class didn't make things easy for her. She was never a particularly social child, a bit shrewd and full of herself, and being teased by her classmates reinforced this up through middle school.
• Through-out her childhood, Annabeth has attended summer camps. When she was around ten she asked her parents to send her to more "educational" ones, however, as the standard make-lanyards-trek-through-the-forest-make-smores camps weren't educational enough for her.
• She began Recollé High School at age 13, even though it was suggested she attend a private school. As much as she is an academic, she wanted to stay within the public school system due to a fear that she would lose her place as the top student if she went somewhere more challenging. She also felt that if public school wasn't "good enough" then it shouldn't be a school anyway. She may have spent half of her freshman year scrutinizing the teachers and quality of education and sent a report to the school district. They did not respond.
• She's now in her senior year, preparing for college in the fall. She plans to become an architect, even though it's been suggested that she could do "so much more" with her grades-- politics, teaching, business, etc.
AU PERSONALITY:
Annabeth has had a very different raising than in canon. She's not a demigod, so she's never dealt with monster attacks (also, there are no monster attacks). She's never had any issues with her parents, so she's never run away from home. While she's gone to summer camps, she'd never consider any her home. She's never been trained to fight, beyond a self-defense class or two and fencing club (which she was only in because Luke did it first). She's lived a more privileged, middle-class life with a sense of security and safety never afforded to her in canon. She's much squishier, so to speak.
On the matter of her intelligence, Annabeth is still an incredibly intelligent girl. While she isn't a daughter of the goddess of wisdom, the lack of demigod ADHD and dyslexia makes it easier for her to focus on her studies-- and focus on her studies she does. She's very academically minded, even more so than her canon counterpart since there's no gods or quests or monsters looming over her head. Annabeth is now, frankly, a total nerd. However, she doesn't appreciate when anyone implies it's "easy" for her-- she puts a lot of work into her grades and various after-school programs. Like in canon, her fatal flaw is hubris, though here it's tempered by the feeling that she needs to show how good she is due to the idea that she is good at school and things being reinforced as a child. She's always been expected to do well, so she does. Does it cause her to miss out on typical "teen" things? Sure, but honestly parties and sports and things just aren't her jam.
While Annabeth does have a lot of pride in herself, she wouldn't consider it to be her "fatal flaw". The keywords there might be "she wouldn't", as some might disagree and say that Annabeth comes off as rather arrogant and a know-it-all. She certainly is that. She wouldn't necessarily disagree with the concept of "rebuilding the world better than the gods", but more so as a theoretical discussion since the whole concept of "gods" is far-fetched to her anyway. She knows she knows a lot of things, but is also keenly aware that she doesn't actually know everything. She's always willing to learn more, and has a great respect for educators and other people above her in academia. She's also not exactly at the level of architect to redesign a godly city, either, though she wants to master the subject.
Luke had an effect on Annabeth in canon, but his effect on Annabeth here is somewhat different. She's had the same sense of idolization for him, but in a baby sister sort of way. And that'd been tempered over years as she realizes her big brother isn't necessarily perfect (but he is great), though she sort of envies the freer way he handles life-- just sort of casually finding himself owning a bar, as opposed to Annabeth's rigorous academics. Not that Annabeth would trade her academics for a bar, thanks. A lack of Percy Jackson has had an effect on her as well. In canon, Percy was her laidback other half, someone who mellowed her in small ways and was the number one person Annabeth would fight for. Annabeth Castellan has no one like that, not in that same way. Her teen years developed very differently-- she's more like her early canon, before she fell for the son of Poseidon. She's a bit snottier, and has had a lot less romantic experience. And while she'd fight for her family and friends, there's no one in her life that she'd fight for as intensely as her canon self would for Percy.
While Annabeth has mellower people around her like in canon, she's still more of a control-freak. She likes things the way she likes them, damn it, and you can fight her but she will have them her way or no way. She's that person in a group project who just does the project herself, whether her group mates have any input or not. She's much more of a loner, not always getting on great with her peers and sometimes prefers it that way. Annabeth has a different level of "no chill". She has more chill about actually fighting people, but less chill about schoolwork and extracurriculars.
